 Diabetes Overview
This section offers employers basic information on diabetes and what it means in the workplace. Employers can play an active role in reducing the burden of diabetes by helping employees identify their risk for diabetes, prevent or delay its onset, and manage the disease effectively.
Managing diabetes effectively can be a significant challenge for the individual employee, who must make major lifestyle changes, share in the cost of managing the disease through blood sugar testing and medications, and learn to cope with a chronic life-threatening condition. Successful diabetes management will not lead to immediate cost savings, but can improve employee health, satisfaction, and quality of life while reducing long-term medical, absenteeism, and disability costs.
