The burden of diabetes is staggering. In Wisconsin, two out of every 25 people have diabetes. Its complications are serious and include heart disease, kidney disease, blindness, and amputations. Diabetes is the fourth leading cause of death in Wisconsin, and costs an estimated $2.8 billion annually in health care expenses and lost productivity. Complications can be delayed and even avoided by losing weight, becoming physically active, eating a healthy diet, and managing the disease. For example, one study found employer costs varied significantly based on better blood sugar control. Individuals with diabetes who controlled their blood sugar cost $24 per month compared to $115 when blood sugar was not controlled. Another study found that individuals with improved control had higher retention rates, lower rates of absenteeism, and lower incidence of restricted work activity. The Diabetes Toolbox was designed to help employers improve employee wellness and reduce the burden of diabetes. The Toolbox contains detailed information on specific workplace strategies:
The Toolbox can help employers of all sizes and circumstances (1) learn about the burden of diabetes, (2) take a proactive focus on early detection and prevention, (3) educate employees with or at risk for developing diabetes, (4) pursue health promotion and wellness activities for all of their employees, and (5) consider the impact of work environment and health insurance benefits and provide employees with tools to stay healthy and manage their disease. |
